Welcome to June! School is out, summer is here, and it’s time to review what the Texas Standard Possession Order (SPO) means for your parenting schedule this month. While June is relatively straightforward, Father’s Day adds a special wrinkle—especially if Dad is the non-custodial parent.
Let’s walk through the June 2025 calendar and break down Thursday visits, weekend possession, and the impact of Father’s Day so that you’re fully prepared.
📅 Thursday Possession – Not This Month
Let’s get the easy part out of the way first:
There are NO Thursday visitations in June for the non-custodial parent.
Why? The SPO clearly states that Thursday visitation only occurs during the regular school term. Since summer is in full swing, that rule no longer applies.
📆 Weekend Possession – Still in Effect!
The weekend schedule does not stop for summer. The Texas SPO allows for regular weekend visits even when school is not in session.
June 2025 Weekend Schedule:
-
June 6 – 1st Friday → Non-Custodial Parent
-
June 20 – 3rd Friday → Non-Custodial Parent
📌 Note: There is no 5th Friday this month, so those are the only two standard weekends for the non-custodial parent.
Unlike Thursdays, weekend visits are year-round. The only change during summer is that pickup and drop-off times may differ, depending on how your SPO is written.
👨👧 Father’s Day – Special Holiday Rules
Here’s where June gets interesting.
Father’s Day in 2025 falls on Sunday, June 15. And yes, the Texas SPO includes a Father’s Day holiday provision.
If Dad is the Custodial Parent:
-
No changes. Dad already has possession, and Father’s Day remains part of his regular schedule.
If Dad is the Non-Custodial Parent:
-
Dad receives Father’s Day weekend, even if it’s not normally his weekend under the SPO.
-
In effect, Dad gains the second weekend of June, even though this would typically belong to the custodial parent.
So, for non-custodial fathers, June 2025 includes:
-
June 6 – 1st Friday (standard possession)
-
June 13-15 – Father’s Day weekend (special holiday possession)
-
June 20 – 3rd Friday (standard possession)
📝 Important: This holiday exception means non-custodial dads get three weekends in June, instead of the usual two.
🔁 Recap
-
❌ No Thursday visits – Summer break suspends Thursday possession.
-
✅ Regular weekend visits – Non-custodial parents still receive 1st and 3rd Fridays.
-
👨👧 Father’s Day – If Dad is the non-custodial parent, he gets the Father’s Day weekend in addition to his regular schedule.
